Decision time for the 5K is coming soon

March 18, 2011

BookIt 5k Walk/Run logoLast year I participated in my first 5K run/walk. I probably should have thought of it as a walk, but I got caught up in the moment when the race started and I tried to run too far and too fast at the beginning. Now it is time to decide if I will run (or walk) again, volunteer to help at the race, or just enjoy the day since we have a wedding to go to that day.

The run was a fundraiser for the Friends of the Ramsey County Public Libraries. It took place starting and ending in the parking lot of what was at that time the about to be re-opened renovated Roseville library.

The library as since re-opened and is busier than ever. They have also been given many awards for their design. The Friends are continuing to give great support to the entire library system.

Here are my results from last year.

  • Goal time: 45 minutes
  • Official time was 45:44.40, a pace of 14:43 per mile
  • Finished 61st out of 112 men & 8th out of the 13 Men 50 – 59

So, should I register to walk in the second annual BookIt 5K? I understand that the route will be similar to the one from last year. I think I better get training for this.

Back at school

January 18, 2011

Today is the first day of school for me … again! This is the start of my endeavor to continue my education in Human Factors. I was admitted into the program just last week, so the registration and orientation process has been, shall we say, almost non-existent. Ok, that is not fair. The Graduate School is the slowpoke on this process. Hopefully, I will be able to register for classes sometime this week.

Right now I have permission from the professors to sit in the classes until my registration is processed. So, today I sat in Psychology 5015 – Cognition, Computation, and Brain. Tomorrow is Industrial Engineering 4521 – Statistics, Quality, and Reliability. Looks like I will have to be thinking this semester.

Fitness room – completion

The pipe is installed for band workouts

The pipe is installed for band workouts

Yesterday, I spent some time driving a bunch of long screws into the wall. They hold the new pipe in place. The pipe gives me a place to loop my bands to allow for chest pulls and other types of exercises. I guess I didn’t do this right for pole dancing. I will have to go and do some research to see what I did wrong.

This completes this project. The room is ready to use (and has been used quite a bit already). Now, we just have to get the other bedroom cleaned out for the reading/guest room.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

Amazon packages under the tree

2-day shipping after Cyber Monday

The result of Cyber Monday shopping on Wednesday is packages to put under the tree! Although, there were as many the day before because we got a jump on Cyber Monday and shopped on the weekend.

Fitness room basically finished (late post)

November 26, 2010

Earlier this week, the fitness room project was complete, but with the Thanksgiving holiday prep the posting is a little delayed.

The bike has gotten some use, the bands have as well. The mirror is a blessing and a curse. The clock has already been returned to Target. The minute hand kept refusing to go past the twelve. A clock that will run for less than an hour is useless. A new one arrives from Amazon today. Still to come, mounting a pipe on the wall to allow pulls with the bands and building the dumbbell rack.

To get better looking window coverings, we cheated. The mini-blinds in our bedroom were grey and a better match for the fitness room. The rose-colored blinds were actually a better match in our bedroom, so the swap was made. Both windows will be getting a new look in the not too distant future.

Fitness room transition – painting day, part 2

November 20, 2010

Progress was made today! The three walls got two coats of Sparkling Frost and the accent wall received two coats of Beautiful Blue. I think they turned out very well. Another item checked off was the moulding around the floor. This had never been finished when the hardwood floor was installed. Since the flooring was done and the room looked great, I could not resist and had to install the rubber flooring. This went in very easily and went according to plan, but I think we will pick up another package to fill in underneath the bike and in the corner. The flooring fits perfectly across the room.

Of course, since the flooring was in, I had to move the futon and the recumbent into the room. A few other pieces of exercise equipment are in the room now. The rest will have to wait until the shelves are reinstalled and the outlets are swapped to white. The outlet swap was delayed to wait until there was sunlight in the room since the power will be off in that room.

While we were at it with moulding, the bathroom moulding went in. There is one shim block left to put in under the countertop and the bathroom project will be officially complete. That is, until spring when we plan to redo the tub surround.

Fitness room transition – painting day, part 1

November 20, 2010

Today the room has been completely emptied and the paint is starting to go up on the walls. First, there was the prep work. A lot of holes have been made in these walls over the years. All of them are now patched to create a fresh palette for new holes.

As usual with these projects, it is time for a trip to Ace Hardware. The ivory outlets and switches are not going to go with the new colors.
